Steel Split In Lincoln
Bensenville, IL (January 21, 2007) –
The Chicago Steel split their weekend series against the
Lincoln Stars; winning Friday night's game in overtime
and suffering a loss Saturday night.
Friday night, the Steel were determined to come out
ahead against the Stars, as they have been playing
strong, but have been coming up just short in recent
road games.
The Stars were able to put the first tally on the
scoreboard with 1:39 left on the clock in the first, but
this would not dampen the spirits of the Steel players
as they headed into the locker room. In the second,
Steel defenseman Dan Lawson (Vermont) evened the score
with a powerplay goal late in the period, but the Stars
countered and were able to take the lead back into their
locker room. The Steel kept their heads high, and got an
important and momentum building goal from Brian Keane
(UMass) to even the score at two in the third.
In overtime, defenseman Matt Godlewski (Princeton) was
able to get the puck past the Stars goaltender for the
overtime win, Godlewski's first goal of the season.
The Three Stars of the game included Chicago's goalie
Rob Madore (1st) and Matt Godlewski (3rd). Madore played
an outstanding game in net, making some spectacular
saves - as he faced 50 shots Friday night.
Saturday night the Steel were looking to come into the
Icebox and leave with a weekend sweep. It was looking to
be a good possibility as they jumped out into an early
lead with a goal from forward Corey Chakeen at 10:18,
but the lead would not last through the period as the
Stars scored two goals in the first period giving them
the lead at intermission. The Steel were not able to
bounce back like they did Friday night as the Stars
scored two more making the final score 4-1. The effort
of Pat McGann in goal should not go unnoticed though, as
McGann faced 64 shots, making excellent saves and
keeping the game as close as he could.
The Chicago Steel host the Sioux Falls Stampede this
weekend at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville on Friday
and Saturday night. Both games start at 7:30pm and
Saturday night is Skate With The Steel, where fans can
join their favorite Steel players on the ice and get
player autographs.
