Split Opening Weekend Games, Defeat 'Hawks in Waterloo
Bensenville, IL (October
7th, 2007) --The
2007-2008 USHL season started up on Friday night with
the Chicago Steel hosting the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders
for their home opener and then traveling west to take on
last season's USHL regular season champs - the Waterloo
Blackhawks on Saturday at Young Arena in the Blackhawks'
opener in two always important Eastern Division games.
Friday night, the Steel suffered a loss to the hands of
Cedar Rapids 7-2, in a disappointing home opener.
Goaltender Rob Madore (Vermont) allowed six goals on 22
shots through two periods suffering the loss and was
pulled in favor of Nick Pisellini, who finished off the
game strong stopping 14 of the 15 shots he faced. Cedar
Rapids rookie goaltender Brady Hjelle (MN-Duluth) picked
up the win for Cedar Rapids stopping 35 of the 37 shots
faced. Scoring their first goals of the season for the
Steel were Brian O'Neill (Yale) shorthanded and Andy
Miele (Miami-OH) on the powerplay.
Saturday night, the Steel quickly recovered from their
previous night's loss and battled an always hostile
environment in Waterloo, knocking off the home team (and
crowd) 6-4. Goaltender Nick Pisellini picked up where he
left off on Friday and backstopped the Steel to the win,
turning aside 26 of 30 shots faced. Waterloo goalie Matt
DiGirolomo (New Hampshire) wasn't as sharp, and took the
loss after allowing five goals against on the night. The
Steel received goals from six different players; John
Moore, Andy Mile (Miami-OH) (2), Mark Anthoine (Maine),
Drew LeBlanc (St. Cloud), Max Nicastro (Boston
University) on the powerplay, and Simon Olsson with a
powerplay empty netter to finish off the 'Hawks. LeBlanc
(1-2-3), Nicastro, (1-1-2), Miele (1-1-2), and Brian
O'Neill (0-2-2) all had multiple point nights for the
winning Steel.
The Steel return to action this weekend at the Edge Ice
Arena and host last season's USHL playoff winners - the
Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday, October 12th and
Saturday, October 13th.
