Steel Selection Camp Underway
Bensenville, IL (June 10th, 2007)
-- The 2007 Chicago Steel Selection Camp kicks
off Monday June 11th through Sunday June 17th, 2007 at
the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois. The week
long camp will be divided into three separate portions.
Monday and Tuesday will feature the Goaltender Camp
which is organized by Steel goalie consultant Stu Gould
with junior and college hockey shooters on hand for
camp. Each goaltender in attendance gets three on-ice
sessions over the two days and is evaluated through a
variety of drills. This camp gives selected goaltenders
a chance to earn one of twelve spots in the Steel Rookie
Camp immediately following the Goaltender Camp. All
goaltenders expecting to play for the Steel must go
through this portion of the camp. This camp, along with
the week long evaluation, allows the Steel hockey staff
to make the best decisions possible on the most
important position in the game. Last season, three of
the four goalies the Steel used earned NCAA Division I
hockey scholarships: Rob Madore (Vermont), Richard
Bachman (Colorado College), and Pat McGann (Quinnipiac).
Wednesday and Thursday the Steel Rookie Camp takes
place. Here, mainly non-Steel veteran players will
battle for an undetermined number of spots for the Steel
Final Camp which takes place immediately following the
Rookie Camp. Players from all levels have been invited
with a focus on high school aged players. Eight
goaltenders from the Rookie Camp will advance to the
Final Camp.
Friday through Sunday is the Chicago Steel Final Camp.
The 15th and 16th will feature four teams of the top
players from the Goalie and Rookie Camp, as well as
specially invited Junior A experienced players and Steel
veterans. On Saturday afternoon, the four teams will be
trimmed down to two teams and they will play two final
games before roster decisions are made on Sunday
afternoon, June 17th.
The Steel and all other USHL clubs must trim down their
30 man protected lists by July 1st to a 25 man list. The
25 man list may be kept through the end of September
into the USHL's Fall Classic (Sept. 27-29) pre-season
showcase in Sioux City, IA. Immediatley following this
event, each team's roster must be cut to 23 active
players for the 2007-2008 USHL season.
The 2007-2008 Steel team will report for training camp
by August 31st. High school players will report earlier
due to school schedules.
Stay tuned for 2007-2008 Chicago Steel roster updates.
The 2007-2008 USHL season schedule should be released in
July.
