Steel Add Downey To Scouting Staff

Bensenville, IL (August 1st, 2007) -- The Chicago Steel have announced that the team has added Bill Downey to their scouting staff for the 2007-2008 season.

Downey played his youth hockey for the Pittsburgh Hornets and was drafted by the Chicago Freeze of the NAHL. After playing with the Freeze, Bill went on to be a four-year standout forward at Penn State University. While at Penn State, Bill was a member of three ACHA National Championship teams and was team captain his senior year. During his junior year, Downey represented the United States on Team USA at the 2003 World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy. After concluding his senior season at Penn State, Bill signed his first professional contract with the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL where he played out the 2004 season. Downey was then invited to the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL training camp and eventually split time in the ECHL and UHL over the next three seasons.

Downey is currently the Head Coach of the Team Comcast Bantam Major '93 team and serves as the Hockey Director at the Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken, NJ. He has also assisted the coaching staffs at the Pennsylvania Keystone State Games.

"Adding Bill Downey to an already impressive staff, gives us another experienced hockey operations member that is young and aspires to greater things in this game and business, which is what we're all about," said Steel GM Jason Koehler. "He's had success at various levels and comes highly recommended by his former coaches. Bill will help us cover the Atlantic District area and provide reports and insight on the top players in New Jersey and Philadelphia as well as other teams and players that visit his region through the season."
