Steel Take 3
of 4 Points On Road
Bensenville, IL (January 14th, 2008)
-- The Chicago Steel took the long bus ride to Kearney,
Nebraska this weekend to face off against the Tri-City
Storm, and Chicago was looking to extend their 5 game
winning streak. The Steel were not able to keep their
winning streak alive, but they were able to leave
Kearney with 3 of the possible 4 points.
Friday night was a seesaw battle
between the two clubs as both teams scored twice in the
first period. Tri-City got on the board first, but Drew
LeBlanc (St. Cloud St.) scored and evened it at one with
a pass from Ryan Schnell. After the Storm took the lead
for the second time of the night, Corey Chakeen scored
his first of the night to even the score at two. Drew
LeBlanc had the assist on Chakeen’s goal.
The second period would be all
Tri-City as Chris Hickey and Alex Hudson for the Storm
both scored making the score 4-2. The third period
would be the exact opposite as the Steel took charge.
Mark Anthoine (Maine) and Corey Chakeen helped the Steel
even the score at 4 forcing overtime. Ryan Schnell got
his second assist on the night on Chakeen’s goal.
Regulation and overtime were not
enough to determine the winner on Friday night, and the
game went to a shootout. Tri-City had the
upper hand in the shootout Friday as they were able to
get 2 past Steel goaltender Nick Pisellini, while
Chicago was unable to sneak any pass Tri-City’s net
minder.
Saturday night, the Steel looked to
jump on the opportunities that Tri-City gave to them
going 3-7 on the powerplay. The Steel gave up the lead
halfway through the first on a shorthanded goal, but
this would not discourage Chicago and Luca Cunti (St.
Cloud St) proved that by scoring a powerplay goal only
45 seconds later. It was Cunti’s 2nd of
the season and Nick Pisellini and Tim Buttery (Michigan
State) were credited with the assists on the goal.
Simon Olsson would also score on the powerplay right
before the end of the period giving Chicago their first
lead of the weekend. Brian Dowd (Niagara) and John
Moore (Colorado College) had the assists on Olsson’s
goal.
Chicago would continue their
scoring streak in the next two periods as John Moore
scored on the powerplay and Drew LeBlanc got his fourth
goal in as many games. Andrew Miller (Yale) and Tim
Buttery had the assist on Moore’s goal, and Chakeen and
Schnell assisted on LeBlanc’s goal.
