Chicago Continues Success
Story By: Chris Babb

Bensenville, IL (October 10th, 2009) - After welcoming Team USA into the league with a 5-1 loss on Friday, the Steel looked to repeat their success in Saturday's home opener.

The Chicago Steel, starting out 3-0, have successfully managed their matchups early on in the 2009 campaign. Scoring 21 goals in their last three games while limiting the opposition to 9 has Chicago sitting atop the USHL’s Eastern Division points standings.

The Steel were well aware of Waterloo’s long term success at the EDGE Ice Arena, making Friday’s early season matchup the team’s first real test.

Forward Andrew Schmit wasted little time going top shelf on Waterloo goalie C.J. Motte, making it 1-0 Chicago.

After a quick goal by Waterloo tied the game, Steel Defenseman Dan Kolomatis turned offensive, capitalizing on nice passing from Sahir Gill and Mark Anthoine (Maine) to record his second goal of the year, which put Chicago up 2-1 after one period of play.

The Black Hawks ran into penalty problems early and often in the second period, giving Chicago 9:00 worth of power play advantage.

Sahir Gill took advantage of nice feeds from Andrei Kuchin and Jake Chelios, whose power play goal made it 3-1 Chicago. Two minutes later, while still on the 5-4 advantage, Chicago’s Alex Krushelnyski notched his first goal of the year, extending the lead to 4-1. Greg Wolfe sent the Steel into the second intermission up 5-1 with seconds to play. For Wolfe, it was his third of the year.

Waterloo was not done though. Pressure by the Black Hawks up front closed the gap, making it 4-3, despite a nice effort by Steel goalie Nick Pisellini (Western Michigan), who received 1st star honors for his 23/26 effort that night.

Anthoine added all the insurance the Steel would need, beating the defense on a fast break to his fourth goal of the season.

Chicago (3-0) now waits for Youngstown (0-1) this Sunday to close out the home stand. The two split the preseason evenly 1-1.
