Steel Take Down Undefeated RoughRiders
Story By: Chris Babb
Bensenville, IL (October 17th, 2009) -  It’s early in the 2009 season, but Saturday’s matchup between the Chicago Steel and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders provided what could be a preview of a yearlong race in the USHL Eastern Division.

The Chicago Steel (3-1) came to Cedar Rapids after an extended home stand in which the offense really carried the load. The Steel have scored no fewer than three goals in any one game, and after a huge offensive performance against Team USA, average an astounding six goals per contest.

Cedar Rapids (3-0) were set to build momentum against the Steel after flawless navigation through a three game road trip to start the season.

Cedar Rapids Goalie Troy Grosenick kept Chicago off the board in the first, a feat that has only happened once this season, and faced very little offensive pressure from the Steel who managed merely 17 shots on goal.

Just over six minutes into the second period Forward Jake Chelios found the back of the net for his second goal this year.  Chelios split two Cedar Rapids defenders on a nice pass from Andrei Kuchin during a power play triggered by RoughRider Eric Robinson.

Five minutes later Chicago’s Defensemen Kevin Lind (Notre Dame) notched his first goal of the season, making it 2-0 Steel.

Chicago Steel Forward Mark Anthoine (Maine) has amassed five goals and three assists through five games. His 5th goal came just under five minutes into the third period of an eventual 3-1 Chicago Steel victory.

Steel Goalie Nick Pisellini (Western Michigan) deserves recognition for his 36 saves on 37 chances. The lone Cedar Rapids goal came in the waning minutes from Jeff Costello. Pisellini now moves to 4-0 when he’s between the pipes and lowered his goals against average to 2.5 goals per game.

The Steel continue their trip west this week to take on Omaha this Thursday October 22nd, followed by games in Lincoln against the Stars on the 23rd and at Sioux Falls where Chicago closes out the weekend with the Western Division’s lone unbeaten Stampeded this Saturday October 24th.

Chicago returns to the Edge Ice Arena October 30th against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
