Gamblers Leave The Edge With a Win
Bensenville, IL (November 28th, 2009) - In their first match up this season, which was on Wednesday, Green Bay snuck past Chicago in OT with a 2-1 victory.

Coming off a solid 4-2 victory over Team USA the night before, Chicago was poised to capitalize on home ice in the back to back series.

In the first period, the two teams combined for 17 total shots on goal, giving a one shot advantage to Green Bay. Steel captain Greg Wolfe proved though: it’s not how many shots you take as much as it is about what you do with them. Wolfe beat Green Bay’s Ryan McKay for his first goal against the Gamblers this year, and his tenth overall.

1-0 Steel after one period of play.

In the second, it was all Green Bay, albeit with controversy late in the period. Anders Lee and Alex Kubiak each benefited from Aaron Harstad passing, lighting the lamp for Green Bay, 2-1 Gamblers.

Late in the 2nd period while in transition, Chicago intercepted an errant pass, taking it back the other way. A pile up ensued in front of the Gamblers’ net when the puck snuck past McKay. Referee Curtis Marouelli waived the goal off however, after determining Steel interference that moved the net before the puck crossed the line.

Green Bay held the 2-1 advantage going into the second intermission.

In the third, Aaron Harstad recorded his third assist when Alex Kubiak nabbed his second goal of the game, pushing Green Bay’s lead to two. They couldn’t have known then but Kubiak’s goal would prove to be huge, representing the game winner for Green Bay.

With roughly five minutes left in regulation Mark Anthoine (Maine) got to work, managing his 14th goal of the year.  The goal knots Anthoine with Omaha’s Matt White for the league lead in goals scored, and more importantly, brought Chicago within one with minutes to play.

A Chicago timeout in the waning moments gave the Steel one last opportunity to push for overtime. Chicago elected to keep Nick Pisellini (Western Michigan) in goal to protect against the quick goal out of the faceoff. The result was one heart stopping push by Chicago that inevitably fell short.

Chicago (10-7-3) slips two points behind Green Bay in the Eastern Standings. Indiana’s loss to Waterloo leaves the Steel tied for second, heading into their back-to-back against the Youngstown Phantoms this Friday and Saturday on the road.

Chicago comes home December 11, following the trip to Ohio for what should be a definitive four game home stand leading into the holiday break.
