The
Chicago Steel entered Friday night's matchup with a
chance to get within three points of the Waterloo Black
Hawks for the fourth playoff spot in the East Division.
Feeding off the home crowd, Chicago beat Waterloo 5-1,
extending their win streak to a season-high six games.
Chicago wasted little time opening the
scoring, when Jak Knelman pounced on the rebound of a
Philip Samuelsson (Boston College) shot to put Chicago
up one just 2:09 into the game.
39 seconds later, Andrew Miller (Yale
University) picked off a head-man pass by Waterloo and
sent Dean Chelios (Michigan State University) in all
alone on Waterloo goalie Parker Milner. Chelios deked
around Milner and slid the puck past him for a quick 2-0
Chicago lead.
The Steel extended their lead to three
goals with 6:34 to go in the first. John Moore
(Colorado College) took a shot from the high slot which
went wide, Rob Linsmayer (Holy Cross) picked up the
rebound and shoveled it past Milner for his seventh goal
of the year.
Early in the second, Waterloo got on the
board on a goal from Nick Pryor, but Chicago's defense,
led by 24 saves from Steel goalie Hudson Stremmel, held
Waterloo off the board the rest of the night.
Midway through the second, with Chicago
on the power play, Miller found a loose puck to the
right of Milner and slid the puck in for his
league-leading 26th goal of the season.
With just over a minute remaining in the
2nd, Mark Anthoine (University of Maine) skated down
right wing, and pulled up in the face-off circle, he
found Moore coming late down left-wing, and Moore rifled
a wrist shot high over Milner's blocker to provide the
final margin of 5-1.
The Steel will go for their seventh
straight win Saturday night against the Cedar Rapids
RoughRiders at 7:30 p..m. Tickets for all Steel games
