Phantoms Overpower Steel
Story By: Steve Newton
Bensenville, IL (October 2nd, 2010) -
Chicago’s Darik Angeli netted his second goal of the
season to tie the score at 8:26 in the first period
before Youngstown’s Scott Mayfield scored the
game-winning goal with 56 seconds left in the first to
lift the Phantoms to a 2-1 victory Saturday night at The
Edge Ice Arena.
The Steel received a 35-save performance from goaltender
Connor Wilson (Yale University), who faced a total of 29
shots in the second and third periods.
Youngstown got on the board at the 7:24 mark of the
first when Stuart Higgins scored a power play goal to
take a 1-0 advantage. Angeli put the puck past Phantoms’
goalie Matthew O’Connor a minute later to even it up,
but Youngstown capitalized on their third power play
opportunity of the first period for a 2-1 lead.
Chicago (1-1-0) was aided by a Ty Loney checking from
behind call with 2:22 remaining and went on a 6-on-4
shortly after when they pulled Wilson. But despite the
manpower advantage, the Steel could not gain an
equalizer.
The Phantoms (2-0-0) out-shot the Steel, 37-26, on the
evening. The Steel enjoyed a 10-8 edge in shots in the
first period of play.
The Steel return to action next Friday at 7:30 when they
face the Indiana Ice at The Edge Ice Arena.
