Weekend Recap

Bensenville, IL (October 30, 2010) -
Chicago sits in third place in the United States Hockey League Eastern Conference standings with eleven points following its weekend split against Waterloo and Team USA.

Chicago’s penalty kill was resilient on Saturday after allowing two power play goals in its loss to Waterloo the night before. Team USA went 0-for-6 on the power play and failed to convert on a 51 second 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period.

Matthew Friese, who assisted on Cole Gunner’s two goals against Waterloo, scored his second goal of the season just 53 seconds into the first period against Team USA. Friese now has five points in four games with Chicago after coming over from Tri-City on October 19th.

Ian Young (Colorado College) was credited with the assist on Friese’s goal, his eighth point (1 goals, 7assists) of the season, which ties him with teammate Danny Mattson (3 goals, 5 assists) for twelfth in the USHL for total points.

Gunner’s two scores on Friday, give him 10 points (five goals, five assists) on the season, tying him for third in the league for total points.

The Steel (5-4-1) took the lead early in each contest, with Friese’s opening minute goal and Gunner’s score at the 3:02 mark in the first period against Waterloo.  But Chicago’s attack leveled off in the second period on Friday and Saturday, when it spent a good chunk of the period killing off penalties and seeing Waterloo and Team USA tie the score at 1-1. Mattson and Tim Weber, however, were able to put the puck past Team USA goalie John Gibson as the Steel avoided a second straight shootout defeat.

Connor Wilson (Yale University) continued to be stellar in goal for Chicago, making 24 stops against Waterloo and 33 against Team USA. It was Wilson’s fifth game with 30 or more saves this season, as he improved his record to 5-3-1.

The Steel will be on the road next weekend when they face Des Moines on Friday and Waterloo on Saturday.  Puck drop for both games is 7:05 p.m.
