Chicago Comes Up Short Against Cedar Rapids
Story By: Steve Newton

Bensenville, IL (December 3, 2010) -
Cason Hohmann scored with just over a minute left in overtime Friday night, as Cedar Rapids defeated Chicago, 3-2, to extend its home winning streak to five at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The Rough Riders’ last home loss came at the hands of the Steel back on October 22nd, when Chicago used two late third period goals to earn a 3-2 victory. Friday’s contest looked like it was going to swing in Chicago’s favor once again, but Hohmann’s overtime goal denied the Steel of their second road win against the Rough Riders this season.

In the first period, Cedar Rapids’ Jayson Megna, who was tied for second in scoring in the United States Hockey League with 22 points going into Friday’s contest, added to his season total with his 13th goal of the year, five minutes, 15 seconds into the frame. He tallied his 24th point less than five minutes later when he helped on Thomas Fallen’s power play goal at 10:37.

The Rough Riders held a 2-0 advantage until Garrett Allen made the score, 2-1, with his first goal as a member of the Steel at the 2:03 mark of the second stanza. Allen, a University of Denver commit, was acquired by Chicago on Tuesday in a trade with the Fargo Force.

Tyler Lapic (University of Wisconsin) knotted the score, 2-all, with 2:02 remaining in the third to send the game into overtime. Allen and Sam Povorozniouk were credited with the assist on Lapic’s score.

Chicago was unable to hold the momentum in the extra period, however, as Hohmann sent the Steel back to Chicago with the overtime loss.

Brady Hjelle made 21 saves in goal for Cedar Rapids to improve his record to 13-1-1. Chicago’s Connor Wilson (Yale University) stopped 22-of-25 shots in the loss.

Chicago will be back at The Edge Ice Arena on Sunday when it takes on Muskegon at 3 p.m.
