Steel Working To Get Back In Position
Bensenville, IL (February 7th, 2010) -
The
Chicago Steel returned to the Edge Ice Area this past
weekend for a back–to-back series with Eastern Division
rivals, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the Green Bay
Gamblers. Despite dropping both contests over the
weekend the Steel are merely five points back of
Waterloo for the fourth and final playoff spot in the
East.
On Friday, Chicago jumped
out to an early 2-0 lead following Steel goals from
Forward Andrei Kuchin and Jay Camper (New Hampshire).
The goals were Kuchin’s 14th and Camper’s 6th.
That would be it
offensively for the Steel, however, who eventually lost
the game 5-2. Steel Goalie Nick Pisellini (Western
Michigan) took
the loss in the effort (33/38).
On Saturday Chicago
hosted Green Bay for its 3rd Annual Puck
Cancer Awareness Night. Before losing the previous night
to Tri-City, the
league leading Gamblers had rattled off fifteen
consecutive wins.
In the 1st period
Chicago’s Brendan Woods nabbed his first goal of the
season with eight minutes gone by in the period. The
Steel’s Nick
Pisellini managed to stop 14 shots before being ejected
for a fighting major. Penalties would be the theme of
the night with the two teams
being whistled for a combined 160 minutes worth of
infractions.
Green Bay’s Sean Little
beat backup Goalie Connor Wilson to knot the game at one
apiece in the 2nd period. Chicago answered
back with
what they thought would be the go ahead score late in
the period but the officials waived it off, determining
that Steel players interfered
with Gambler Goalie Steve Summerhays.
The Gamblers took the
lead with 13 minutes left in regulation, 2-1. Late
penalties by Green Bay left the door open for Chicago to
take
advantage of a five on three power play. Chicago pressed
in the waning moments but dropped the game 2-1.
Chicago will now head to
Waterloo, IA with a stop in Omaha before returning to
the Edge Ice Arena with games the 19th and 20th
of
February. |
