Looking To The Future
Bensenville, IL (March 27th, 2010) -
With Chicago’s playoff push coming to a close, the
remaining six games in the ’09-’10 campaign are about
building for the future, beginning with a 4-1 victory
over the Indiana Ice on March 24th.
Chicago’s economic use of shots on goal, four goals on
22 opportunities, made this one a no-doubter, beginning
with first period goals from Forwards Darik Angeli (14th)
and Wisconsin committee Brendan Woods (6th).
Danny Mattson (North Dakota) tacked on Chicago’s third
goal of the game, his 12th, to extend the
Steel lead out to three.
Indiana pulled Goalie Casey DeSmith (18/21) with
roughly eight minutes left hoping to spur offense,
achieving in the sense that the Ice saw their shots on
goal for the period explode from five shots in the
second period up to 17 shots in the third. After an
empty net goal by Ian Young (2nd) Indiana
broke through with its’ only goal-by Forward Bryon
Paulazzo.
Steel Goalie Connor Wilson, (31/32), was credited with
the win, his 13th.
Two days later, Chicago hit the road, this time headed
to Sioux City to close out the season series with the
Musketeers. The two have played each other close with
two of the three games resolved in shootout, the other
going to overtime.
This match would be played close as well, but, outside
of a first period goal by Danny Mattson (13th),
Chicago‘s offense remained dormant on way to a 2-1 loss.
Despite giving up only two goals, Wilson (20/22) was
tabbed with his 16th loss of the season.
Chicago wrapped up the week’s play with a Saturday
matchup with the Des Moines Buccaneers at the Buccaneer
Arena. Both teams have managed two wins apiece and the
fifth game would prove to be the swing match for season
bragging rights.
Sandwiched between two Buccaneer goals Steel Forward
Cole Gunner (Air Force) recorded his ninth goal, leaving
Chicago down 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
Chicago’s Brendan Woods managed the only goal by either
side in the second period, tying the score heading to
the final frame. The goal was Woods’ third in four
games.
Two early goals in the third by Des Moines put the
verdict out of reach despite a last minute effort by
Chicago’s Andrei Kuchin on a rare power play. Kuchin’s
goal was his 19th. The 4-3 loss drops the
Steel into fifth place in the Eastern Division heading
back to Chicago for a three game series to close out the
season beginning March 31 against the Youngstown
Phantoms.
