Poapst Hired by Chicago Blackhawks
Bensenville, IL (September 1, 2010) - The
Chicago Steel organization is proud to announce that
Steve Poapst has taken a position with the Chicago
Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks have announced today the hiring of the
former National Hockey League defenseman as an assistant
coach with the American Hockey League's Rockford
IceHogs. The former Blackhawks blueliner joins Head
Coach Bill Peters and Assistant Coach Ted Dent on the
coaching staff of the organization’s top minor league
affiliate.
Poapst, 41, has served as General
Manager and Head Coach of the United States Hockey
League's Chicago Steel since December of 2006.
During his tenure with the Steel, Poapst
accumulated 99 career wins (1st overall in
Steel History), he took the team to the Eastern Division
Finals in 07-08 and has helped develop 7 players who
have been drafted in the NHL draft; Will Weber, Max
Nicastro, John Moore,
Phillip Sammuelson, Barron Smith, Mark Adams,
Kevin Lind and Mark Goggin.
Under Poapst, Andrew Miller became
the USHL Player of the year and USA Hockey player of the
Year, John Moore became the USHL Defensive player of the
year and Mike Walsh won the Curt Hammer Award.
Poapst has also had 62 players earn division one
scholarships.

knowledge will help assist our strong commitment to the
development of our young talent in the organization,"
said Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman. "Under the
direction of Bill Peters we are confident that Steve and
Ted Dent will have a direct hand in developing the
future of the Chicago Blackhawks."
The
Cornwall,
Ontario, native played 220 of his
307 regular-season NHL games as a defenseman with the
Blackhawks between 2000 and 2004. Poapst registered
eight goals, 23 assists, and 118 penalty minutes with
Chicago and 36 points (8G, 28A) overall in
seven NHL seasons with Washington, Pittsburgh, St.
Louis and the Blackhawks. He
added 205 points (45G, 160A) and 340 penalty minutes in
498 career AHL tilts during a career that spanned 13
years.
