Steel Bounce Back From
Early Deficit,But Dubuque Too Strong In End
(September 17, 2011)-The Chicago fought back from a
4-0 first period deficit Saturday night with three goals
in the second period, but Dubuque held off the Steel in
the third period and skated away with a 5-4 victory at
the Darien Sportsplex.
The Fighting Saints came out firing in the first period,
putting up two goals in the first 50 seconds of the game
to grab a 2-0 lead. Dubuque added two more late in the
first to go into the intermission with a 4-0 advantage.
Chicago’s Ryan Fraser-Lee got Chicago on the board, two
minutes, 30 seconds into the second stanza. Steel goals
by Joel Benson and Aidan Cavallini cut the Dubuque lead
to 4-3, however Ryan Siiro snuck one past Steel goalie
Alex Sakellaropoulos for the Saints’ 5-3 second
intermission lead.
The Steel once again clawed back with Canon Pieper
cutting the Dubuque advantage in half with a goal at the
15:21 mark in the third period. Chicago pulled
Sakellaropoulos with a minute left to put an extra
attacker on the ice, but the Saints survived the Steel’s
late surge for the victory.
Sakellaropoulos made 25 saves between the pipes for
Chicago. The Steel outshot Dubuque 32-30 in the game,
with a sizeable 14-5 advantage in the second period.
