Steel Take Home Shootout Win
(January 27th, 2012) - Three periods of hockey would
not be enough on Friday night and it would take 7 rounds
in the shooutout, but Chicago's Charlie O'Connor scored
the shootouts lone goal giving the Steel the big road
win.
The Steel took the first lead of the game with
Andrew Miller scoring on the power play only 2:30
into the game. Ray Pigozzi and Michael Fallon had
the assists on Miller's 12th goal of the year.
Indiana was also able to capitalize on the powerplay three
minutes later tying the game at one. With 2:55 left
in the period Indiana scored again which gave them a
2-1 lead going into into the first intermission.
The second period would find the Steel getting on
the scoreboard first again when Jeff Kubiak netted
his third of the year; Pigozzi and Charlie O'Connor
earned the assists on the powerplay goal. The Ice
were able to find the back of the net again in the
2nd, giving them the 3-2 lead going into the 2nd
intermission.
Chicago was able to continue their success on the
powerplay as they struck first in the 3rd period.
This time it was Joel Benson scoring for the Steel.
Fallon and Jaccob Slavin assisted on Benson's second
goal of the year. Adding to the special teams,
Andrew Miller gave the Steel a 4-3 lead scoring
short handed with 1:54 left in the game. Christian
Heil had the assist on Miller's second goal of the
night, his 13th of the year. The 4-3 lead would not
hold up though as the Ice were able to capitalize on
the powerplay with :47 seconds to go in regulation.
Overtime would not be enough for either team as both
Alex Sakellaropoulos and Jon Gilles came up big in
net for their teams.
In the shootout, Steel goaltender Alex
Sakellaropoulos saved all seven shots he faced, and
saved 19 of the 20 shots he faced in regulation and
overtime.
Mathias Dahlstrom stopped 24 of the 27 shots that he
faced in his 34:46 of ice time.
The Steel are back in action tomorrow night when
they take on the Green Bay Gamblers for Chicago's
5th annual Mascot Night. Tickets are still
