GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The USHL announced Monday that Steel defenseman Luke Reid has been named USHL Forward of the Week for the week of March 18-24. This is the second time this season that the Steel have won Defenseman of the Week. Captain Matteo Pietroniro earned the award in January.
Reid registered three points (1-2-3) in the three-game week, including his first career USHL goal in a Friday night win over Green Bay. The rookie defenseman also finished the week with a +8 rating and now has 18 points (1-17-18) and a +13 rating through 53 games this season.
Reid’s first career USHL goal came as the final tally in an 8-3 win over Green Bay on Friday night. Reid fired a one-time slap shot from the blue line that found its way through traffic in front before finding twine past the goaltender.
“Luke is one of the most competitive players I have been around,” said Head Coach Greg Moore. “This honor has been long coming for a player who has been a big contributor offensively and defensively for our team.”
The Warman, Saskatchewan native has been paired with Pietroniro on the Steel’s top line for his last 34 games played and has 15 (1-14-15) of his 18 points this season during that span.
“We’re proud to see Luke’s efforts recognized by the league,” said General Manager Ryan Hardy. “He is passionate about his development and has made great strides learning his position this season to compliment his natural talent. We look forward to him continuing to grow the rest of the year and are excited for him to be one of the top NHL prospects in the USHL in 2019-2020.”
The Steel are back in action on the road Wednesday night as they travel to Cedar Rapids for a pivotal showdown with the RoughRiders. Chicago has a three-point lead over Cedar Rapids, who is tied for third in the Eastern Conference with the Youngstown Phantoms.
Chicago returns to Fox Valley Ice Arena for a pair of weekend home games on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. Friday night is Pucks and Pups Night presented by Woofbeach. Fans are invited to bring their dog to the game as the Steel square off with the Madison Capitols. Friday is also a Riasing Cane’s Kids Day as fans 12 and under can receive a Red Zone ticket, Steel drawstring backpack and Raising Cane’s Kids combo card all for just $10. Saturday night is the Animal House Anniversary celebration presented by Waubonsee Community College. The first 500 fans will receive a “College” t-shirt when the Steel host the Waterloo Black Hawks.
