“This is an opportunity for us to celebrate our sport with the next generation of players and a fanbase that has been instrumental in our success,” said Steel President Dan Lehv. “We’ve been fortunate to develop wonderful relationships with youth hockey teams, associations and governing bodies, and to have the chance to share our success and welcome hockey families form our are to cheer us on during the Clark Cup Final is a way for us to say thank you.”
Since relocating to Fox Valley Ice Arena in 2015, the Steel have developed meaningful partnerships with many local youth hockey associations. The Steel have been joined by youth hockey teams at nearly every home game this season as part of the Chicago Steel Youth Hockey Experience, which includes skating pre-game and during intermission as well as joining Steel players on the blue line for the National Anthem. Steel players have volunteered at youth practices and games as part of the team’s various community initiatives.
As the nation’s only Tier 1 Junior League, the USHL represents a key step in the ladder of development and had more players taken (57) at the 2018 NHL Draft than any other junior league in the world. More than 95 percent of USHL players receive an opportunity to play Division I college hockey, including 21 of the Steel’s 25 currently rostered players for the 2019 playoff run.
“This is also an opportunity for us to showcase the path our players have chosen to take, coming to the USHL with the next step being college for the vast majority of our players,” said Lehv. “While fans taking advantage of this offer will get to see the best of our league on the ice during the Clark Cup Final, we hope the young hockey players appreciate the work that these athletes put in off the ice as we help enhance their development as students and young men.”
The Steel captured the Eastern Conference Championship with a 3-1 series win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the Eastern Conference Final to secure their place in the Clark Cup Final.
Chicago and Sioux Falls have never met in the Clark Cup Playoffs and both are looking for their second Clark Cup Championship in recent history. Chicago won its only other Clark Cup Championship in 2016-17 while the latest Sioux Falls Championship was in the 2014-15 season while its first was in 2006-07.
Chicago’s path to the Clark Cup Final as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference included a Frist Round bye followed by 3 games to 1 series victories over Cedar Rapids (Eastern Conference Semifinals) and Muskegon (Eastern Conference Final). Sioux Falls finished third in the Western Conference during the regular season and swept Sioux City in the best-of-three First Round series that included a four-overtime contest. The Stampede then defeated the No. 2 seed Waterloo 3 games to 1 (Western Conference Semifinals) before sweeping top seed and Anderson Cup Champion Tri-City in the Western Conference Final.
