GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The 20th season of Chicago Steel hockey continues Saturday with the first home matchup of the 2019-20 campaign. After the team unveils the 2019 Eastern Conference championship banner, Chicago faces off against the Green Bay Gamblers in the first of eight regular-season matchups between the Eastern Conference foes. As part of the season-long celebration, the Steel will be wearing special 20th Season alternate jerseys for the first time on Saturday as well as several other times during the regular season.
After the game, fans can stick around to meet the Steel and receive autographs from the entire team.
The Steel won both of their contests at the Dick’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic to start the regular season, beating the Sioux City Musketeers by a 3-2 final, then taking down the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-2 in a 2019 Clark Cup rematch. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine tallied two goals on Saturday including the game-winner and Sean Farrell notched a three-point game (2G, 1A) in the victory on Sunday.
Last season the Steel went 4-2-0-0 in six matchups with Green Bay. Entering Saturday, Chicago forward Matty De St. Phalle has reached the scoresheet in three consecutive appearances against the Gamblers, tallying two goals and two assists in those games.
Green Bay is led by team captain and University of Denver commit McKade Webster. The St. Louis, Mo., native tallied 30 points (11G, 19A) in 59 games during the 2017-18 season with Green Bay but was limited to just six appearances a year ago due to a wrist injury. Gambler defenseman Xan Gurney has been a part of two Clark Cup champions, the 2016-17 Chicago Steel and the 2017-18 Fargo Force.
Following the home opener on Saturday, Chicago travels to Green Bay for a matchup on Friday, Oct. 11, then heads to Youngstown for a back-to-back set against the Phantoms on Sunday, Oct. 13 and Monday Oct. 14.
