The defenseman and netminder helped Chicago to a two-game sweep of Fargo Oct. 25 & 26

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — Two members of the Chicago Steel were named Players of the Week for their respective positions, the United States Hockey League announced Tuesday. Defenseman Owen Power and netminder Victor Ostman were selected for their standout performances in back-to-back victories over the Fargo Force on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. The honors are the first of the season for both Power and Ostman.

Power extended his career-long point streak to six games (3G, 6A), netting two goals in back-to-back wins against the Fargo Force. The Mississauga, Ontario, native paces league blueliners in points with three goals and nine helpers through ten outings this season.

Steel head coach Greg Moore has witnessed the development in the University of Michigan commit since last season.

“Owen has come into this season as a much more mature player than last year. Having said that, he is still 16 years old and what makes him special is his daily approach to develop and get better,” said Moore.

Ostman made 46 saves in 92 minutes of play over the two games, allowing just one goal over that stretch and earning the win in both of his appearances. The Danderyd, Sweden, native’s five victories are the most among USHL goaltenders this year. The 6-foot-4, 197-pound netminder ranks sixth in the league with a 1.98 goal-against average and stands ninth among goalies with a .913 save percentage.

In Ostman’s first season in the league, Moore likes how the netminder has settled into his role with the club.

“Victor has come a long way in one month and you can start to see his confidence grow. He is 100% bought into what he needs to do to improve. From day one he has worked hard and has been a good teammate,” noted Moore.

The second-year bench boss pointed out the players’ hard work during the week, leading to honors like this, a first for the Steel this season.

“It’s fun to watch players come to the rink every day to work hard, pay attention to details, grow as people and then be recognized by the league for the success they have on the weekends,” said Moore.

Both players have helped the Chicago Steel to the top of the USHL standings after the first full month of play with a 7-2-1-0 record (15 pts.).

Fans can see the first-place Steel in action this weekend as the club hosts Second Chance Halloween with Candy Exchange on Friday, Nov. 1 against the Youngstown Phantoms (4-4-2-0, 10 pts.) and The Simpsons on Ice presented by The Entrepreneur’s Source on Saturday, Nov. 2 against the Waterloo Black Hawks (7-1-0-0, 14 pts). After Saturday’s game, fans can Skate with the Steel and Saturday also marks the first Topgolf Family Pack Game of the season.
