The Steel swap Phase I draft picks in addition to trading for the forward

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The Chicago Steel acquired forward Erik Middendorf from the Omaha Lancers in exchange for multiple draft picks, the team announced Wednesday.

Middendorf, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., played in six games for Colorado College of the NCAA this season prior to departing the program, recording two helpers. A season ago, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward tallied seven goals and four assists in 41 appearances during his freshman season for the Tigers.

The 19-year-old spent two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program from 2016-2018, recording 59 total games of USHL experience and scoring 24 points (8G, 16A) over that stretch.

In the deal, Chicago receives a fourth-round selection in the 2020 Phase I draft and a second-round pick in the 2021 Phase I draft while sending first-round selections in both the 2020 and 2021 Phase I drafts and a third-round pick in the 2021 Phase I draft to Omaha. The selections being sent to Omaha originally belonged to the Lancers, meaning that the Chicago Steel still owns picks in each of those rounds.

Steel General Manager Ryan Hardy has a previous track record of success with the newest member of the Chicago Steel roster.

“Erik Middendorf and I have a long history together going back to winning a Gold Medal for the United States at the 2016 Youth Olympic Games.  Once (Omaha Head Coach/GM) David Wilkie learned of Erik’s plans to leave Colorado College, he wisely made a claim on him.  At that point, based on the surplus of draft picks which we have stockpiled through previous transactions, it made sense for us to return the Lancers some of their picks in an effort to bring Erik to Chicago.  We’re excited to welcome him to the Steel.  Our belief is that we can help him find new frontiers in his development and that he can help us in our pursuit to return the Clark Cup to Chicago,” said Hardy.

Middendorf will not be in uniform this weekend and will travel with the Steel to Sioux City for games against the Musketeers on Nov. 16-17.
