GENEVA, ILLINOIS — In a weekend featuring two of the most anticipated promotional dates of the season, the first-place Chicago Steel take the ice at Fox Valley Ice Arena for two clashes against the Youngstown Phantoms on December 28 & 29.
Fans arriving early for the Saturday, Dec. 28th game, a 7:05 pm puck drop, will receive a Chicago Steel branded Zamboni Coin Bank Giveaway. The world-famous machine, replicated in a miniature, poly-stone version with a Steel logo and striping on the sides, will be available to the first 500 spectators to arrive at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
After the Saturday night showdown, fans have the chance to get pictures and autographs from the team during an Xfinity Skate With the Steel. Fans are invited to bring their own skates or skates will be available for rental from Fox Valley Ice Arena for $4.
Sunday afternoon’s 3:05 pm game offers another chance for great pictures when Olaf from Frozen comes to the Steel game! The only snowman in the world who loves warm hugs will be in attendance for the Frozen-themed game on the 29th!
The Topgolf Family Pack is available for Sunday’s matchup and includes four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, four chuck-a-pucks, four $10 off Topgolf Play Cards and four Topgolf stadium seat pads, starting at just $48. The Topgolf Family Pack is only available in advance and is not available for purchase on the day of the game.
Chicago enters the two-game weekend series, its first action since Dec. 14, with a 19-4-1-0 record (39 pts) and five consecutive victories dating back to Nov. 30.
In three games this season, the Steel are 2-1-0-0 against the Phantoms. Chicago took both games of a back-to-back set on Oct. 13 & 14, outscoring Youngstown 14-6 over the two contests in Ohio. The Phantoms defeated the Steel by a 4-2 margin on Nov. 1 in the clubs’ most recent clash.
The Steel welcome back defenseman Luke Reid and forwards Brendan Brisson, Sam Colangelo, Sean Farrell and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine from the World Junior A Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
The five Chicago skaters represented Team USA and helped the club to a Bronze Medal and a 5-0-1 record during the two-week tournament from Dec. 5-15. Brisson (5G, 7A), Fontaine (5G, 4A), and Farrell (5G, 3A) ranked first, second and third in points, respectively, while Brisson and Fontaine earned Tournament All-Star Team honors.
Youngstown forward Trevor Kuntar helped Team USA to the bronze medal as well, tallying three goals and adding two assists throughout the tournament. The Williamsville, N.Y., native shares fifth in the USHL with 13 goals this season.
Following the two-game homestand against Youngstown, the Steel will head to Texas for a pair of matchups at the inaugural USHL Frosty Cup against the Green Bay Gamblers on Jan. 2 & 3. Thursday’s matchup is scheduled for a 7:30 pm CT puck drop at Comerica Center in Frisco, while Friday’s contest will be played at the Cotton Bowl at 5:00 pm CT in Dallas on the same surface used for the NHL Winter Classic between the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars two days prior.
