The Steel forward tallied his first career hat trick at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — Chicago Steel forward Sam Colangelo was awarded Forward of the Week, the United States Hockey League announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of the season for Colangelo and he is the third member of the Steel to be awarded Forward of the Week during the 2019-20 campaign.

The Northeastern University commit registered a career-best four-point game (3G, 1A) during the inaugural USHL Frosty Cup in a 7-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers on Jan. 3 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

Colangelo has registered points in 12 of his last 14 games including a current four-game point streak (7G, 4A). This season, the Stoneham, Mass., native shares third in the league with 34 points (18G, 16A) over 23 games.

Head Coach Brock Sheahan noted Colangelo’s work ethic before the breakout performance.

“As a staff we are excited for Sam to be recognized by the league,” said Sheahan. “He has improved consistently this season and it was great to see him get rewarded for his week-to-week effort with an amazing game on Friday at the Cotton Bowl.”

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound skater was ranked as a ‘B’-level prospect on NHL Central Scouting’s most recent watch list on Nov. 11 and represented Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 5-15 earlier this season.

On Dec. 27, Colangelo was selected as one of five players from the Chicago Steel for the BioSteel All-American Game, a showcase of the best American-born NHL Draft-eligible players in the USHL, scheduled for Mon., Jan. 20 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

The Steel return to home ice this Fri., Jan. 10 for Superheroes Night against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 7:05 pm puck drop is a Raising Cane’s Kids Day, a $10 ticket deal for kids age 12 and younger.
