Postgame Central at Green Bay Gamblers - October 22, 2021

By Chicago Steel, 10/22/21, 10:00PM CDT

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN — The Chicago Steel (6-0-3-0; 15 pts.) earned seven power play opportunities but could only cash in on one, falling 2-1 in overtime against the Green Bay Gamblers (4-3-0-0; 7 pts.) on Friday night at Resch Center in Wisconsin.

With the overtime loss, the Steel have now earned a point in each of the team’s first nine games of the season and will have a chance to tie the franchise record for longest point streak to start a season on Saturday, Oct. 23 on home ice at Fox Valley Ice Arena against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 2016-2017 Steel went the first 10 games without a regulation loss, later becoming the first team in franchise history to win the Clark Cup.

Green Bay forward and USHL goals leader, Jackson Hallum, potted both markers for Green Bay as Jack Harvey lit the lamp for Chicago in the Friday night bout.

Steel netminder Gibson Homer and Gamblers goaltender Aaron Randazzo dueled out a defensive battle with Homer making 30 saves and Randazzo stopping 31.

The USHL leader in points, Jackson Blake, came close to lighting the lamp in the first period on a penalty kill. The Carolina Hurricanes prospect flipped a shot that ricocheted off the glass and back to his stick on the left side of the net. Blake got a shot away but couldn’t put it where he wanted, keeping the Steel scoreless.

Homer made back-to-back highlight reel-stops in the last part of the first period. Losing his stick while sliding from his left to right in the crease, Homer fought off a chance for Green Bay. Moments later, he denied Cameron Lund on a point-blank chance.

The Gamblers began to tilt the ice in the second period but could only find the back of the net once.

Facing a 5-on-3 for just over 40 seconds, the Steel were able to successfully cancel off the two-man deficit but the USHL leader in goals, Jackson Hallum, capitalized on the ensuing abbreviated power play.  Speeding down the left side of the Gambler zone, the Vegas Golden Knights prospect flipped a wrister past Homer’s blocker for his eighth goal of the season.

Totaling a 16-10 advantage in shots on goal during the second, Green Bay controlled the majority of chances until the Steel got their fifth power play opportunity of the game during 4-on-3 action, late in the second.

With a good amount of open ice, the four-man Steel unit set up with Jackson Blake in the left circle, bouncing a puck off a Green Bay defender’s skate to Jake Livanavage in the high slot. Livanavage fired a wrister that was turned away, bouncing to Jack Harvey at the right dot who one-touched the rebound past Gamblers netminder Aaron Randazzo to tie the game.

Randazzo stopped all 12 shots he saw in the final frame, helping Green Bay keep the score tied as the Gamblers managed just six shots of their own in the third.

Regulation time expired with the score tied at 1-1 before Hallum capped the night for the home team.

After a net-front scramble early in overtime, Hallum pounced on a loose puck and let go a shot before Homer could recover, ending the game 2-1 in favor of Green Bay.

The Steel are back on home ice after a three-game road swing on Saturday October 23 for “19 Promotions We Missed in 2020” and the first Family Pack Game of the season, a special ticket offer that includes four tickets, four regular hot dogs, four chips, four sodas/waters and four chuck-a-pucks for just $50.
