Postgame Central vs. Cedar Rapids RoughRiders - March 11, 2022

By Chicago Steel, 03/11/22, 10:30PM CST

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The Chicago Steel (28-11-7-1; 64 pts.) never trailed in a 5-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (20-22-2-1; 43 pts.) Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Despite the RoughRiders narrowing the deficit to one goal twice during the game, Chicago scored the only two goals of the third period to seal the win.

Steel forward Jack Harvey tallied two goals and added two assists for a career-high four point game while Nick Moldenhauer added a pair of goals. Steel netminder Christian Manz made 31 saves in his fifth performance allowing two or fewer goals in a game.

In a convincing start to the action, the Steel tilted the ice with a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, potting two of their chances.

Forward Andon Cerbone showed off impressive hand-eye coordination for his eighth marker of the season just over six minutes into the game. After Jayden Perron cycled the puck to Sam Lipkin, Lipkin found Cerbone on the doorstep. Initially stopped by Cedar Rapids netminder Connor Hasley, Cerbone batted the puck out of midair to reach the back of the net.

Nick Moldenhauer doubled the lead with his 12th marker of the season late in the opening frame. Moldenhauer teamed up with Jack Harvey on a give-and-go play in the right circle as Moldenhauer dipped a forehand-backhand move across the crease and past Hasley.

Cedar Rapids registering the first 10 shots on goal in the second period including a marker from David Chen less than a minute into the frame. Chen one-timed a feed from Eric Pohlkamp on a 3-on-1 rush, his fourth goal of the year.

Chicago earned a power play midway through the second and capitalized to extend the lead back to a pair of goals.

As the man advantage wound down, Cerbone tossed a pass to Cal Thomas in front of the net who deflected the puck behind him across the crease to a wide-open Jack Harvey. Hasley had no chance to react as Harvey tapped home his 18th of the year.

The RoughRiders fought their way back to within a goal just before the end of the middle frame. Off an offensive zone draw, Andy Moore corralled a loose puck and picked the corner to cut the deficit to 3-2 in favor of Chicago.

The Steel separated from Cedar Rapids with a strong third period.

Moldenhauer waited until midway through the final frame to extend the lead to two goals with his 13th of the season. Initiated by Moldenhauer, Harvey and Chris Delaney went tic-tac-toe as Delaney fed a cross-crease pass from right to left, giving Moldenhauer a wide-open crease.

Harvey sealed the win after Hasley misplayed a puck late in the frame.  Harvey met the Cedar Rapids goaltender out of his crease in the right circle, lifting Hasley’s his stick and sliding a tough angle shot into the unoccupied crease for his 19th of the season.

The Steel held on in the final minutes with Manz posting 24 of his 31 stops in the final two periods.

The victory was Chicago’s first regulation win on home ice since Dec. 30, a 9-3 win against the Madison Capitols.
