Chicago improves to 2-0 record at USHL Fall Classic

CRANBERRY TWP., PA — The Chicago Steel (2-2-0-0 preseason) picked up a 4-1 victory for a second consecutive night at the USHL Fall Classic, defeating the Lincoln Stars Friday at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in suburban Pittsburgh. Like Thursday’s action, four different players notched goals for the Steel, including Jordan Seyfert and Samuel Bucek lighting the lamp for a second straight game. Goaltender Justin Robbins had a strong showing between the pipes, having his shutout bid narrowly denied by one goal late in the third period.

Chicago improved to 2-0-0-0 at the Fall Classic, a preseason showcase attended by nearly 300 NHL and NCAA scouts. The Steel wrap up the preseason Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. CT showdown with the Des Moines Buccaneers.

Five minutes into the game, Brett Budgell recorded his first goal with the Steel. The Newfoundland native intercepted a pass just inside the blue line, skated toward the crease and snuck a shot past Stars netminder Tomas Vomacka. Seyfert then doubled Chicago’s lead just prior to the first intermission, burying a backhander just beneath the crossbar.

Early in the second period, defenseman Derek Daschke skated from center ice into the Stars’ zone along the left wing and fired a shot from just inside the blue line to increase the lead to 3-0.

Just 40 seconds into the third period, Bucek blasted a one-timer from the top of the left circle, tallying a goal six seconds into a power play to put the Steel up by four.

The game’s final goal came from Lincoln’s Blake Hayward, who forced a turnover and registered an unassisted tally off a wrister from the top of the left circle with just over eight minutes remaining.
