Chicago finishes USHL Fall Classic with perfect 3-0 record

CRANBERRY TWP., PA — The Chicago Steel notched five goals in the second period Saturday en route to a 5-3 defeat of the Des Moines Buccaneers at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in suburban Pittsburgh. With the win, Chicago completed its three-game appearance at the 2017 USHL Fall Classic with a perfect 3-0-0-0 record.

The Steel now prepare to open the 2017-2018 regular season in six nights with a Friday, Oct. 6 visit to the Dubuque Fighting Saints, before the Home Opener the following night at Fox Valley Ice Arena, including a celebration of Chicago’s 2017 Clark Cup Championship with a ring ceremony and banner unveiling.

For a third night in a row, four different players lit the lamp for Chicago, including a pair of goals from Vegas Golden Knights draft pick Jack Dugan.

Chicago’s explosive second period effort came after allowing the only two goals of the first period. Des Moines defenseman Scooter Brickey blasted a power play one-timer from the right circle at 12:07, marking the first time the Steel trailed in a game at the Fall Classic. Then, with five minutes to go in the first period, the Buccaneers doubled their lead when Mike Hardman buried a rebound.

The Steel quickly turned things around in the second period. Sam Stevens sent a shot past the stick side of Des Moines goalie Ryan Snowden at 2:07. Less than 90 seconds later, Tyler Gratton tied the game, capitalizing on his own rebound. Aaro Vidgren went top shelf at 5:25, giving Chicago its first lead of the contest. Dugan then recorded two goals in under six minutes, putting the Steel up 5-2 at the second intermission.

Tommy Parrottino scored a backhand, five-hole goal for the Buccaneers in the third period, but the Steel held on for a two-goal victory.

Netminders Justin Robbins and Derek Schaedig split time in the victory.
