Dugan tallies lone goal for Chicago in 43-shot effort

SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA — The Sioux Falls Stampede (27-13-4-4, 62 pts.) exploded for four goals in the final frame and a total of five unanswered goals in the game’s last 24 minutes to defeat the Chicago Steel (22-21-1-4, 49 pts.) 5-1 Saturday at Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The Steel registered 43 shots, but Sioux Falls goaltender Mikhail Berdin saved 42 in the victory.

Jack Dugan opened the scoring with his team-leading 22nd goal of the season on Chicago’s second shot of the night just 3:31 into the game. Dugan, a Vegas Golden Knights prospect, found the back of the net with a far-side wrist shot past the blocker of Berdin, a Winnipeg Jets prospect, after Baker Shore sent a pass careening off the near boards for Dugan to collect as he entered the Sioux Falls zone.

The teams combined for 81 penalty minutes in a physical second period. Jaxon Nelson evened up the score for Sioux Falls with 3:30 to play in the frame when he pushed a loose puck through Oskar Autio’s five hole for a shorthanded tally. Aaro Vidgren attempted a clearing pass that deflected off Matt Quercia’s skate to Autio’s left and found Nelson alone in front of Autio.

Sioux Falls owned the third period on the scoresheet with four goals including a trio of marks within a 3:55 span. Nolan Walker scored the go-ahead goal on a rush down the left side 6:46 into the third and then collected a primary assist when Colin Swoyer’s power-play shot from the point put the Stampede ahead 3-1 just 89 seconds later. Artem Ivanyuzhenkov pushed the lead to three, scoring a one-timer on a 3-on-2 rush with 9:19 to play in the game.

Griffin Lunn would score the final Sioux Falls goal with 1:34 remaining, capping the four-goal period. The Steel outshot the Stampede 43-30 and the teams combined for 99 penalty minutes.
