The Steel began the 2018-2019 season last week at the USHL Fall Classic in Cranberry Township, Penn. Chicago left wing Robert Mastrosimone scored a pair of shorthanded goals in Friday’s contest but the Lincoln Stars scored a pair of late goals and eventually won the game in overtime, 5-4. On Saturday, the Steel scored five times but the Des Moines Buccaneers’ high-octane offense was too much to overcome in the 10-5 loss.

  • Robert Mastrosimone’s pair of shorthanded goals on Friday marked just the second time in team history that a player scored multiple shorthanded goals in one game. The other time was December 30, 2016 when Jack Badini scored two against Green Bay.
  • A pair of Steel defensemen scored their first USHL goals last weekend including rookie Owen Power on Thursday and veteran Casey Staum on Friday.
  • Power’s became the fifth player in team history to score a goal in his USHL debut and the first since Tim Davison did so on March 24, 2012.
  • Ryan Doolin scored twice in Friday’s loss, marking his first and second goals in the USHL. He is tied with Mastrosimone for the team-lead in goals with two.
  • The top line of Mastrosimone, Doolin and Nick Abruzzese scored four of the team’s nine goals in the first two games and combined for six points.
  • Blue line scoring was a big part of the Steel’s offense last weekend as defenseman scored three goals in two games (Power, Staum and John Spetz).
  • Matthew Barnaby chipped in a trio of helpers during the first two games of his USHL career.

  • Friday’s matchup with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders brings to town a team that played a pair of close games at the USHL Fall Classic. Cedar Rapids lost to Fargo 3-2 in overtime and beat Lincoln 3-1 in a pair of low-scoring contests.
    • The RoughRiders are led by a pair of forwards with two points each; Grant Silianoff (2-0-2) and Nathan Smith (0-2-2).
    • Cedar Rapids finished last weekend 1-for-10 on the man-advantage and 5-for-7 on the Penalty Kill.
    • Goaltender Blake Pietila was named USHL Goalie of the Week for his play at the Fall Classic.
  • Green Bay comes to town on Saturday coming off a split of the team’s two USHL Fall Classic games including a 5-3 loss to Sioux City and a 3-2 win over Dubuque.
    • The Gamblers are led in scoring by a pair of forwards (Paul Maust and Gleb Murtazin) and defensemen (Ethan Frisch and Tyler Spott) all with two points each. Maust, Frisch and Spott each finished with a goal and assist on the weekend as Murtazin added two assists.
    • Green Bay finished 2-for-9 on the powerplay and killed off all nine penalties against them.
