GENEVA, ILLINOIS — Team USA announced Friday that Steel forward Robert Mastrosimone will represent the United States at the 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament later this month.
“It’s always an honor to be able to represent your country,” said Mastrosimone. “I had the opportunity to this year at the Hlinka Gretzky Memorial Cup as well as last year at Five Nations.”
Mastrosimone, an East Islip, N.Y. native, is representing his home nation for the second time this year after he played for Team USA at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup where he recorded five points in five games.
The Five Nations Tournament is scheduled to take place in Kravare, Czech Republic from Wednesday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 11. Mastrosimone will miss next weekend’s games for the Steel as they take on Waterloo on Friday, Nov. 9 and travel to Madison on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Steel forward is the only USHL player not from the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) to make the roster.
Mastrosimone helped lead Team USA to the title in the spring’s U-18 Five Nations Tournament in in Plymouth, Michigan where he recorded four points (1-3-4) in four games as the team won first place.
Team USA plays Wednesday, Nov. 7 (8 a.m. vs. Sweden), Thursday, Nov. 8 (12 p.m. vs. Czech Republic), Friday, Nov. 9 (8 a.m. vs. Switzerland) and Sunday, Nov. 11 (8 a.m. vs. Finland).
The Boston University commit currently leads the Steel with 13 points (8-5-13) in 11 games this season. Mastrosimone has recorded a point in all of the games the Steel have scored a goal in this season. Last season, his USHL rookie campaign, Mastrosimone recorded 45 points (16-29-45) as one of three players to appear in all 60 games.
“[Steel Head Coach] Greg [Moore] and I share in the belief that a core tenet of our program is to facilitate opportunities for our players to participate in international competition,” said Steel General Manager Ryan Hardy. “While we will miss Robert this weekend, we couldn’t be prouder of him for earning the honor of representing the United States once again.”

Former Steel defenseman Kevin Lind (105 games, 2008-2010) is serving as intern assistant coach this season with the USNTDP and will coach at the tournament. Lind represented the Steel at the 2009-2010 USHL All-Star Game before winning the NCAA Championship with Notre Dame in the 2012-2013 season.
The Steel are back in action Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Waterloo Black Hawks at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The game is 70’s Night and is also the first Raising Cane’s Kid’s Day. Kids 12 and under can receive a Red Zone ticket, Steel drawstring backpack and Raising Cane’s free kid’s combo card for just $10. Chicago then travels to Madison, Wis. for a Saturday night game against the conference rival Capitols.
